“You lied to me Barbara!” he says and gets up to sit on the bed.


“What do you mean Mike?”


“I mean you deliberately lied to me. All these forty years, you’ve just been pretending?…Do you even love me?”


“Of course I do! Why would you even say that? Haven’t I stayed with you these forty years?”


“Does Junior even know?”


“No,” she said, the atmosphere still, after her utterance.” I,” she began,” really wanted to tell you but I was afraid how you’ll react”


“Well, the cat’s out of the bag now!”


“I know ,and I’m sorry Mike.” He grappled with how to respond to that. He took in a deep breath ,and let it all out just like the therapist had taught him. “You could have said something just before our wedding though?”


She kept silent.


“My God! And of all the things you could be, you are a Liverpool fan?” he said, with his nostrils flaring. “A Li’pool fan Barbara, a li’pool fan?!”


It was midnight, and the whole neighborhood was quiet.
Even the crickets slept now, and the quiet of the night was intermittently broken by the blast of ships’ horns at the harbour nearby. “Can’t you consider being a Manchester United fan… for me?”


“No, Mike. I’m sorry,” Barbara said.


“Why not? What’s wrong with United?”


“What’s right with them?” She said, her chest heaving up and down vibrantly with laughter.


“Barbara!”
